FMC’s community health team empowers women at “Sis, It’s You!” event
On Saturday, July 29, Family Medical Centers’ team of community health workers joined the “Sis, It’s You!” women’s empowerment event hosted by the South Point Girls Volleyball Team at South Point High School. Designed to uplift young women, this event was a great opportunity for Family Medical Centers’ community health team to spread awareness about the services offered by the Ironton-Lawrence Community Action Organization (ILCAO) and its federally-qualified Family Medical Centers (FMC).
The team attending the event consisted of three members: two community health workers, Grace Cox and Lakin Moore, and a community health coordinator, Angela Pleasant. At the event, the team served as a vital connection between the community and essential health resources. Their goal was to inform attendees about the wide range of services provided by FMC and ILCAO, ensuring important information reaches those in need.
“Knowledge is important when it comes to access,” says ILCAO’s Executive Director, DR Gossett. “By sharing information about our services and increasing awareness, we equip individuals with the power to access resources. Empowerment flourishes when people have with the tools they need to make decisions and improve their well-being.”
The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers sharing insights on empowerment, as well as activities, team-building exercises, workshops, giveaways, and more. For the giveaway, FMC provided a gift basket of self-care items. The lucky recipient was a member of the South Point volleyball team.
FMC is a federally-qualified health center serving approximately 16,000 OH-KY-WV tri-state residents annually. FMC’s community health workers are front-line workers who bridge gaps between the community’s health and social services, ensuring access to care is facilitated and responsive to the community’s unique needs. Through education, counseling, support, and advocacy, FMC’s community health workers connect those in need with health care and other supportive services.
